Johnson ready to peak as a Test quickJIM MORTON

Spearhead Mitchell Johnson has finally embraced his role as Australia's "leader of the attack" and now expects to hit his peak as a Test paceman.

World cricket's most mercurial and inconsistent player in 2009, Johnson has settled back into a menacing groove with assured and impressive performances against Pakistan.

The 28-year-old hasn't ripped through the Pakistani batting but has taken 11 wickets at 15.72, many at crucial periods in the two Test wins, and has relentlessly hit the right marks.

It's a far cry from his early performances during the Ashes series loss when he succumbed to the pressure of leading the attack and also dealing with external family dramas.

But Johnson, now with 31 Tests under his belt, feels better equipped following the England meltdown, which made him stronger and smarter.

"Going through England was probably a good test for me and that probably helped me get to where I am now," he said. "I'm happy in a way because I might not have learnt that lesson."

Johnson felt he was possibly guilty of relaxing too much and underrating the West Indies in the 2-0 series win at the start of the summer.
